You Won’t Crumble
When Life’s Earthquakes Shake You, Stand on a Strong Foundation
“He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.” — Psalm 62:2 NLT
Y’all know I know a little bit about earthquakes—and how destructive and damaging they can be.
Last weekend, I experienced a bit of an earthquake in my own life. Not the kind that shakes the ground beneath your feet, but one that shook me physically, mentally, and emotionally. Pain, fear, and frustration were shaking me big time.
In that moment, I came to realize something powerful: had it not been for my foundation—my spiritual foundation being strong—I could have completely crumbled.
No, I’m not boasting. I’m simply sharing what I experienced. I had the opportunity to see, in a very real way, the benefits of having a strong spiritual foundation.
Your spiritual health and healing are important.
It is your spiritual health that helps keep you intact when everything around you feels like it is falling apart. It is your spiritual health that speaks to your mind and reminds you that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. It is your spiritual health that encourages your body and spirit to keep fighting—to choose life, hope, and perseverance.
Your spiritual foundation is where your strength lies.
Life will have its earthquakes. Sometimes they come through physical challenges. Sometimes they come through mental and emotional struggles, relationships, finances, disappointment, loss, or circumstances completely outside of our control.
Society and culture may offer many solutions to help us brace ourselves against the struggles of daily living. And while some of those things may have their place, I believe there are three essentials we need in our spiritual lives if we want to weather whatever storm comes our way.
1. Praise and Worship
Praise and worship have a way of shifting our focus.
When we praise God in the middle of difficulty, we are reminding ourselves that our circumstances are not bigger than our God. Worship takes our eyes off the problem and places them back on the One who is greater than the problem.
You may not feel like praising. You may not understand what God is doing. You may even have tears in your eyes while you worship.
Praise anyway. Worship anyway.
Sometimes your breakthrough begins with simply opening your mouth and declaring that God is still good.
2. The Word of God
When life is shaking you, you need something solid to stand on. God’s Word provides that foundation.
The Word reminds us of who God is, who we are in Him, and what He has promised. When fear starts speaking, God’s Word gives us truth. When discouragement speaks, God’s Word gives us hope. When we feel weak, God’s Word reminds us where our strength comes from.
Don’t wait until the earthquake comes to find your foundation. Build it now. Read the Word. Meditate on it. Speak it. Hide it in your heart so that when difficult moments come, you already have something on the inside to stand on.
3. Prayer
Prayer is not just something we do when we need something from God. Prayer is how we stay connected to Him.
Talk to God when you’re happy. Talk to Him when you’re hurting. Talk to Him when you’re afraid. Talk to Him when you don’t understand. And most importantly, learn to listen. There is strength in knowing that you don’t have to carry everything by yourself. You can take your burdens to God and trust Him with what you cannot control.
Prayer keeps us connected to our Source. When you intentionally practice praise and worship, stay in God’s Word, and maintain a consistent prayer life, you are building something stronger than your circumstances. You are building your spiritual foundation. And when the earthquakes of life come, and they will come, you may still feel the shaking. You may cry. You may hurt. You may become afraid. You may even wonder how you are going to make it through.
But being shaken is not the same as being destroyed. A strong foundation can make all the difference.
I really want to encourage you today: Build a strong spiritual foundation in God. Don’t wait until the storm comes. Don’t wait until life starts shaking. Start building now.
There’s a song that says, “Take the Lord along with you everywhere you go.” Take Him with you. Because I’m a living witness—you’re going to need Him. You’re definitely going to need Him everywhere you go.
And when life shakes you, remember:
He alone is your rock.
He alone is your salvation.
He is your fortress.
And with Him as your foundation, you don’t have to crumble.
