Start With A Praise
Praise Him First: Remembering Who God Is
There is something powerful that happens when we slow down long enough to meditate on who God is.
In the middle of busy schedules, responsibilities, challenges, and everyday life, it can be easy to focus on what we need from God rather than simply taking time to remember who He is. But when we intentionally pause and reflect on His goodness, His faithfulness, His mercy, His grace, and His love, something begins to happen in our hearts.
We remember. We remember what He has already done for us. We remember the prayers He has answered, the doors He has opened, the times He made a way when we couldn’t see one, and the moments He carried us when we didn’t have the strength to carry ourselves. And when we remember, our love for Him is stirred up. We can’t help but worship. We can’t help but adore Him. We can’t help but give Him praise.
God Just Deserves It!
First of all, God deserves our praise simply because He is God. We don’t have to wait until everything is going well to praise Him. We don’t have to wait for the breakthrough, the blessing, the answered prayer, or the miracle. He is worthy right now. Revelation 4:11 declares: “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”
Think about that for a moment.
God is worthy. He is worthy of glory. He is worthy of honor. He is worthy of our worship. He is worthy of our attention. He is worthy of our gratitude. Not because of what He can give us, but because of who He is.
Praise Before the Requests
Sometimes our prayer time can quickly become a list of everything we need God to do.
“Lord, I need You to…”
“Lord, please help me…”
“Lord, open this door…”
“Lord, fix this situation…”
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with bringing our requests to God. He invites us to come to Him. He cares about what concerns us, and He wants us to cast our cares on Him. But what if we started our prayers differently? What if before we asked God for anything, we simply stopped and worshiped Him for everything He already is?
Praise changes our perspective. When we praise God first, we are reminded that our circumstances are not bigger than our God. Our problems may be real, but so is His power. Our questions may be many, but His faithfulness remains.
Remember What He Has Done
One of the most beautiful ways to stir up our worship is to remember. Take a moment and think about where you were—and where God has brought you. Think about the things you survived that you never thought you would survive. Think about the prayers you prayed years ago that God answered. Think about the doors that closed that you didn’t understand at the time, but later realized God was protecting you. Think about the moments when you were afraid, but God gave you peace. Think about the times you felt alone, but God reminded you that He was with you. Remember His faithfulness.
Sometimes we need to take a spiritual inventory—not of everything that is wrong, but of everything God has already done. And when we do, gratitude begins to rise. Worship becomes natural. Our hearts begin to say, “Lord, You have been so good to me.”
Worship Isn’t Just for the Good Days
True worship isn’t dependent on perfect circumstances. We praise God when the answer has come, but we also praise Him while we’re waiting. We praise Him when we understand, and we praise Him when we don’t. We praise Him when the road is easy, and we praise Him when we’re walking through a difficult season. Why Because He hasn’t changed. Our circumstances change. Our emotions change. Our seasons change. But God remains faithful. That is why praise is so powerful. Praise takes our eyes off the temporary and redirects them toward the eternal.
Before You Ask, Praise
So the next time you take a moment to pray, try something different. Before you bring your requests, remember who God is. Before you tell Him what you need, thank Him for what He’s already done. Before you ask Him to move, worship Him for who He is. And if you don’t have a request at all, praise Him anyway! Because God doesn’t have to do another thing for Him to be worthy of your praise.
Slow down. Take a breath. Think about who God is. Remember what He has done. And then let your heart do what it was created to do:
Worship.
He is worthy. Always.
